We are currently undertaking a research program to study whether the fundamental excitation of electrons in carbon nanotubes is really a 1d plamson, similar to the 2d plasmons we are studying in GaAs semiconductors. Such a plasmon is predicted to exist but has never been observed. The studies will illuminate some fundamental physics questions about the nature of 1d wires, while at the same time answering the question: what is the inherent speed limit of molecular electronics? Recent achievements include synthesis of the world's longest electrically contacted single walled carbon nantoube, demonstration of the world's fastest nanotube transistor, and demonstration of nanotubes as interconnect wiring at breakneck speeds of up to 10 GHz. An additionally area of research we are exploring includes using our ultra-long nanotubes as antennas to get wireless information into and out of nanoystems.
